Food Pantry Weekly, 24Jan2018

Greetings Fellow Foodies!   My apologies for the lateness of this update. Time got way ahead of me after Wednesday! It was a very interesting and extremely busy food pantry this week. We were somewhat short on volunteers plus we ran out of numbers creating a slight backup in registration upstairs. I found myself in long conversations with three different clients which pulled me away from my normal duties which I felt left a void in helping. I still believe we have an extraordinary group of volunteers who do their jobs even when shorthanded. I thank God for all of you!!   Grace and Peace!   Please see the note below about Tuesday Morning. We have a critical need for a helper or two.  Join our team! Or step up your current involvement! See below under What do we need, and if you have questions or interest in joining us please reply to this email or contact Colleen Meyer or Pastor Stella. Thank You to all our supporters and volunteers, and as always, please pray for all our clients. This week’s numbers: · # households served: 115 · # individuals served: 385 · # first-timers: 16 · # of volunteers: 24 What do we need: · Needs list for those wanting to donate items: o toiletries – toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo (including the free hotel size), toilet paper, feminine products, etc. o baby food, diapers, other baby items o reusable shopping bags (no paper bags please.) · Financial donations to the food pantry may be made online at covenantaustin.org, or by check to Covenant UMC (“Food Pantry” on memo line)....

Greetings Fellow Foodies! Matthew 9:36 – But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. The weather this week created an unusual set of circumstances and forced us to make some tough decisions, originally planning to close altogether. However, after giving it second thoughts and with an improved weather forecast for Wednesday, we decided to open because we knew there was no way we could have gotten the word to our clients on such short notice. It brought to mind the scripture verse above! Although we could not make our usual Food Bank pickup this week, we were well supplied with canned goods and other staples. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, especially Vickie, we made up bags of what we had and handed those out as the clients registered. It reminded me of our early years when that was all we did. The difference was that we didn’t have 91 clients show up! All went smooth and I know all the volunteers who came were glad we did this. I’m sure our efforts pleased Jesus which should be our only goal every week, if not every day! Hopefully we will be back up to a full strength operation next week. Blessings and peace to all!   Please see the note below about Tuesday Morning. We have a critical need for a helper or two.  Join our team! Or step up your current involvement!  See below under What do we need, and if you have questions or interest in joining us please reply to this email or...

Greetings Fellow Foodies, 2 Corinthians 1:3-8 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure,  far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. If you’ve ever spent time volunteering on Wednesday nights, you’ve probably had the opportunity to listen to the stories of our clients. Nobody wants to be have to come, wait several hours just to be able to receive some food to help feed their families. Countless times I’ve heard someone say they never expected to be in this position but when you are hungry, you have to put your pride aside. I helped carry out some bags for a first time client who told me that very thing and she came because both her adult sons are heroine addicts and all her resources went to try and help...

Greetings Fellow Foodies! It was great way to start the new year by opening the church doors again for the Food Pantry! Everyone seemed to come with extra enthusiasm, both clients and volunteers. Thankfully the extreme cold temperatures of the previous few days had somewhat abated on Wednesday evening. It was a fairly light night compared to our pre-holiday crowds so everything seemed to flow smoothly with minimal issues. The snack supper of Frito pie was also a big hit.  The new year brings with it lots of changes and perhaps the biggest one is that this was our first week without Carl! I would have to say that he left us a well-oiled machine. If you don’t know by now, our new point person for the Food Pantry is Ernie Cruz! Thanks Ernie for stepping up to this challenge! I became aware Wednesday of the fact that while the needs of our clients are great, several of our volunteers are also dealing with some major health issues. Please pray for our volunteers along with our clients. We have kicked off 2018 with a great start but as you read below, we still are in need of some non-Wednesday night volunteering! Grace and peace to all! Please see the note below about Tuesday Morning. We have a critical need for a helper or two.  Join our team! Or step up your current involvement!  See below under What do we need, and if you have questions or interest in joining us please reply to this email or contact Colleen Meyer or Pastor Stella.  Thank You  to all our supporters and volunteers, and as always, please...
