Food Pantry Weekly, 14Nov2018

Greetings Fellow Foodies! This week’s numbers: · # households served: 144 · # individuals served: 514 · # first-timers: 32 · # of volunteers: 36 4,882 pounds of food received this week from all our various sources!  Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. – Hebrews 10:24 If we thought the previous Wednesday, the 7th, was a tough night then this past Wednesday was off the charts, literally! We broke two records. One for the amount of people and households we helped and two, for the length of time we had to stay open in order to accommodate the first. It was both an exhausting and frustrating evening for both our volunteers and our clients. Without too much grumbling, the volunteers continued to serve our clients until we were finally able to serve the last client. Kudos to your perseverance and patience with the process. All through it all, even the last client was able to go home with food. All praise to God! . I’ve been giving the long length of the food pantry a lot of thought since Wednesday. Yes, we had to stay an extra 30 to 40 minutes past our designated closing time but I have to put things in perspective. We will be closed next week for a well deserved break for our volunteers so an extra hour out of my life this week so that others may have food to eat won’t really make that much difference. I also think that while we put our best effort forward to stage the entire Wednesday evening within...

Greetings Fellow Foodies! This week’s numbers: · # households served: 123 · # individuals served: 448 · # first-timers: 22 · # of volunteers: 33 4,489 pounds of food received this week from all our various sources!    In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.  –Philippians 2:5 Ever have one of those times when every thing seemed to go wrong at once? I experienced some of that this week with aspects of the food pantry operations. From time to time we are offered donations of various items other than food and a week ago we were offered a used commercial one-door refrigerator. A couple of us went to inspect it, liked it and told the guy we met that we would take it but that we would have to arrange a way to pick it up. We worked out the logistics to pick it up the next day however apparently some other agency came that same evening and grabbed it unbeknownst to the guy we talked to! . That was very discouraging only to be followed by the news that the food pantry had run out of money and we still had bills to pay, specifically the Food Bank where we get a lot of our basic items each week. Hence, the urgent plea that was sent out earlier this week to this list to solicit some emergency funding. I hope you had a chance to read and respond to that and several of you DID immediately step up! Thank you! . Then Wednesday evening came and it was one of those nights that from...

Greetings Fellow Foodies! This week’s numbers: · # households served: 84 · # individuals served: 307 · # first-timers: 11 · # of volunteers: 35 4115 pounds of food received this week from all our various sources!    The forecast for this past Wednesday was for thunderstorms to begin at 4pm, right when we open the front doors. And to be sure the skies looked ominous. I had been praying all day for the rain to hold off until we were through and indeed we didn’t get the steady rain until right at 6:30. God is good! . When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  –Matthew 9:36 . As I heard the story of one of our clients concerning his life and how difficult things had been for him through various events, it confirmed the reason why we do the food pantry. It is much more than just handing out food, though that is a basic need. It’s about fellowship with those we would not normally associate with on a daily basis. It’s about caring for God’s children and I see that mostly when you, the volunteers interact with the clients, one on one. There is no longer a division line between volunteer and client. We become friends! . Let me close by sharing a couple of passages from two devotionals I use every week: . Our world suffers not only from physical needs but also from spiritual brokenness. Jesus came to meet that need and challenged His followers to join Him in this work....
