History

In the summer of 1981, a faithful group of United Methodists set out to establish a church in their rapidly-growing North Central Austin neighborhood. They found a temporary home Beaver Brook Day Care Center. Some of the taller people found the day care’s chairs a little uncomfortable, but the welcome was warm and they kept coming back.

One of the first priorities for the young church was to establish a choir, which they did that fall, even before they chose a name.  Music and worship have been at the heart of Covenant United Methodist Church ever since.  On June 6, 1982 Covenant received its Certificate of Charter. A few months later, construction began on the Duval Road site, and new ministries including a youth group, Sunday school classes and the food pantry, were soon established. A preschool soon followed.

The church grew steadily, and a new, larger sanctuary was built in 2004.

Covenant UMC is a vibrant, loving, grace-filled congregation with a rich history of meaningful ministries, strong spiritual leadership, and abundance of spiritual formation opportunities. We take seriously our mission to glorify God, witness by word and deed, and make disciples of Jesus Christ so that all may have eternal life.
