Mission

We seek to love and serve the world in the name of Jesus Christ, and children are involved in that effort in projects such as CROP Walk for world hunger, Angel Tree for prisoner’s children, and Operation Christmas Child which spreads the love and message of the gospel to war-torn countries around the world.

 Fellowship and Fun

Covenant offers the community special events of praise and celebration with food, crafts, music and drama. These include a Christmas and Easter events, Vacation Bible School, and our most recent addition, the Halloween “No Fear Celebration,” a night of costume parades, hayrides, s’mores, and games.

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP

We’re blessed to have children worship and play with us, and we recognize that they are called to work for God’s kingdom in their own special ways. Therefore, we seek to nurture their spiritual formation at each stage of their development as we involve them in worship, build their understanding, and support their families.

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP

Children of all ages are always welcome in our worship services.  During both services you can find packets with child-friendly materials for pew art and quiet work.

During the 11:15a.m. service the children ages 4 years to 3rd grade are invited to come forward for a Time with Young Disciples, after which they may go to Children's Chapel to enjoy Bible Stories, praise, prayer, and play.  They return after the sermon.  On Communion Sunday the children return earlier so they can participate in communion with their family.

INFANTS AND TODDLERS

Children are always welcome in our worship services.  However, parents often need some options.  Our paid staff offers loving childcare for children 0-3 years during our worship services on Sunday mornings and during special services.  This nursery is located down the hallway from the church kitchen.

A sound proof room at the back of the sanctuary is designated as a retreat for parents with small children during the worship services.  The sound system and large windows allow parents to continue to enjoy the service while children are less restricted.   Both men’s and women’s restrooms across from the sanctuary are equipped with diaper changing stations.

COVENANT PRESCHOOL

COVENANT UMC PRESCHOOL

The Preschool is a ministry of Covenant United Methodist Church. We serve families by providing nurturing care for children ages 12 months to 5 years old in a Christian setting. Parents have the opportunity to pursue their own interests with the knowledge that their children are being cared for in a responsible, loving manner. Contact Director Laura Clemens at lclemens@covenantaustin.org.
More Info

Our preschool is licensed by the state of Texas, and Austin Rising Star has recognized us as a 4 Star program. We use a theme-based curriculum, and believe children learn best through play. Children participate in teacher-directed and child-centered activities, both indoors and outdoors. We maintain low teacher to student ratios.

Special Events and Activities
Every child participates in a Music and Movement class each week. Beginning at age 3 our students attend chapel weekly.  We offer Spanish classes to our Pre-K students as well. The children participate in two musical programs each year, including our annual re-telling of the Christmas story. We have special visitors during our study of community helpers, and a petting zoo comes when we have our Rodeo Days celebration in the spring. We offer after school classes for 3 and 4 year-olds, including cooking and an Explorers science class.

Our Pre-K classes go on several field trips that reflect their unit of study. This year some of the places they will be visiting are Crowe’s Nest Farm, Zachary Scott Theatre, and the Austin Nature and Science Center.

The children are invited to participate in two service projects through the preschool. In the fall we collect food for Covenant UMC’s Food Pantry. The children present their offerings at our Thanksgiving celebration. In the spring we visit an assisted living facility and sing for the residents.

FAQ’s

These are some of the questions people frequently ask about our program.

Where are you located?
We’re at 4410 Duval Road, which is between Highway 183 and Mopac Expressway. Our school is in the one story building next to the church sanctuary.

How can I arrange to tour the school?
We encourage potential parents and students to visit our school. The director sets aside Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:30 to give tours. If those times are not convenient, please call Laura Clemens at 346-6366 to schedule a meeting time. We can’t always accommodate drop-in visitors, so it’s a good idea to call ahead.

How does your waiting list work?
There is no charge to be on our waiting list. We call families in order on the waiting list once an opening becomes available. Openings can occur throughout the school year. Each year in January we call families on our waiting list to see if they are interested in staying on the list. Those who don’t respond will be removed from the list.

What are the chances of my child getting in if we’re on the waiting list?
Unfortunately, being on the list does not guarantee that a space will be available for your child. After registration is complete openings only occur if families already in the program decide to leave. Sometimes a class will have many children move, but other times no one leaves a class during the school year.

What age does my child have to be to attend your program?
Students must be 12 months old by September 1 to enter our toddler class. We have classes for 2 and 3 year-olds, and our Pre-K classes serve 4 year-olds.
Children must be that age by the September 1 cut-off date.

My child has a September birthday. Is it o.k. to put him or her in a higher age group?
We don’t make any exceptions to our age requirements, even for students whose birthdays are near the cut-off date.

Do you have a summer program?
No, we are closed during the summer. If you want to contact the school over the summer, please leave a voicemail, or send an email. The director does check her messages periodically during the summer, and she will get back to you as soon as possible.

The Children's Choirs
Children learn more than to sing a song:   They hear Bible stories relating to their music, learn Bible verses and discuss their meanings, and are taught the basic elements of music.

The Cherubs Choir
Consists of children 4 years through first grade. They rehearse on Wednesday night from 6:30 to 7:00 pm and sing periodically in worship.

The Kids of the Covenant
through fifth grade. They also rehearse on Wednesday night from 5 to 6 pm. The children do a musical production 2 times a year and sing periodically in worship.

EDUCATION

CHILDREN'S EDUCATION

At Covenant, we learn a lot from our kids as we walk on our Christian journey together. We offer Sunday School 10:00 to 11:00am on Sunday mornings for children nursery age through grade 5. Children hear Bible stories, sing, play games, and do crafts together with their church friends and the caring adults who lead them.

Toddlers and Twos: We long for the youngest guests at Covenant to experience the love of God at all times radiated through the caring adults around them. During the Sunday School hour (10:00-11:00) we focus that effort with Toddlers and Twos, a cirriculum for children aged 12-36 months.  Our leaders present Bible lessons that aim to help children recognize themselves as God's children and invite them in to a relationship with their faith family. Toddlers and two-year-olds will learn about Jesus, understand that God loves them, know that church is a special place where they are loved, and discover their gifts in God's world, such as their minds, bodies, families, and friends. Faith growth and retention is fostered through the familiar activities of matching, sorting, identifying, and putting together puzzles.

School-Age: Children three years (who are potty trained and third birthdays were before September 1 of the current school year) through fifth grade gather in our Sunday School room where they are met by teachers who enjoy getting to know them and hearing about their lives.

Our lessons come from “Rock Soild” (www.iamrocksolid.com) which provides a firm foundation built on a comprehensive 3-year journey through the Bible with story-based experiences. By learning the key Bible stories, children will be better able to understand and remember the Bible’s message and be encouraged to apply the lessons to their lives.

Sunday morning Bible study. Young parents and professionals meet weekly to share Bible study and fellowship from about 9:45 to 10:30. This class is currently also planning to offer parents a CPR course for Infants so watch for the information on time and date.

Monthly Fellowship Parents of young children and professionals meet in homes on the second Sunday of each month for a meal and often the evening includes a compassion project with the fellowship time. Check website for list of homes and directions.

Meals for Families with new babies. New babies are occasions for great joy and often great stress. CUMC supports these families with meals in the early weeks of the new arrival. One of the challenges is communicating with these families that this loving support is available not only to members but to our neighbors. Please contact the church office if you have a family to recommend or if you would like to help with these meals.

Babysitting resources. One of the greatest needs for families with young children is childcare options. The FIT ministry is currently offering 3 resources:
1.       A list of youth and adult sitters for babysitting needs
2.       A list of families that would like to trade out on a family to family basis.
3.       The FIT ministry is also offering Small Children’s Social once a quarter.
Families share the cost of caregivers in a home setting for children to play together while parents are out.
