Food Pantry Weekly, 07Mar2018

Greetings Fellow Foodies!

This week’s numbers:

  •  # households served: 92
  •  # individuals served: 268
  •  # first-timers: 12
  •  # of volunteers: 31

It was another beautiful evening to have the food pantry. I had the pleasure of giving a tour of the food pantry to a girl scout troop. Apparently I missed my calling as a tour guide but the pride I feel about our food pantry makes it easy to promote. The girls were delightful and a couple of them with their Moms even stayed and volunteered.

Speaking of volunteers, our plea for more volunteers was certainly answered plus we are excited about the possibility of having our order from the food bank delivered. More blessings from God! It was a great night and everything went relatively smooth without any crazy stories. Between that, a smaller than average crowd and the abundance of volunteers, it made for what seemed like a quick evening.

As promised, I want to focus on the Free Store. The Free Store is an official ministry of the Austin district of the United Methodist Church. It used to have an actual store in East Austin but for a variety of reasons, they had to relocate to Memorial UMC on Berkman Rd. Since we were getting more donations than they could accommodate and with the Food Pantry snack supper is full gear in the Fellowship, Rita Weeks had the idea to just open a satellite store at Covenant during Food Pantry hours. It has been a great success and Rita and her dedicated team are doing a tremendous job running that portion of our ministry. If you haven’t had the chance to see what goes on there, drop by sometime. Here’s a link to the Free Store:

Don’t forget to Spring forward this weekend as daylight savings is upon us.

Blessings and peace to all!

Please see the note below about Tuesday Morning. We have a critical need for a helper or two.

Join our team! Or step up your current involvement!  See below under What do we need, and if you have questions or interest in joining us please reply to this email or contact Bob Weeks, Ernie Cruz or Pastor Stella.  Thank You  to all our supporters and volunteers, and as always, please pray for all our clients.

What do we need:

  • Needs list for those wanting to donate items:

o toiletries – toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo (including the free hotel size), toilet paper, feminine products, etc.

o baby food, diapers, other baby items

o reusable shopping bags (no paper bags please.)

  • Financial donations to the food pantry may be made online at, or by check to Covenant UMC (“Food Pantry” on memo line).

Would you like to  volunteer in the food pantry? There are multiple  opportunities each week:

o Wednesday 4:00pm-7:00pm for volunteers to help set-up and distribute food to our clients. Everyone is welcome… just drop in!

o Wednesday morning 10am-noon: we receive deliveries and sort/set-up bread and produce.

o Tuesday morning: We need volunteers to pick up food at the Food Bank and bring it back to Covenant. You can do a ride-along with one of our current volunteers to see if it’s a good fit for you. You don’t need to use your own vehicle but you do need to be in good physical condition, able to lift and transfer up to 60 pounds. This is an essential task that must be done every week to make the food pantry work. Please help spread the word and let me know if you have questions. By the way, this is a great job to share with a friend: enjoy the company, get a little workout!
